With Spain’s ratification of the NATO Accession Protocol today, Macedonia has taken the major (final) step of becoming a member of NATO. “The Spanish Senate unanimously ratified the Protocol,” Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov said during a joint press conference with Spanish Ambassador Emilio Lorenzo Serra, according to the English version of Republica. “On behalf of the Government and the Macedonian citizens, let me extend my gratitude to Spain and the country’s foreign minister for putting the issue on the agenda in such difficult circumstances for Spain, Europe and the world.”
Spain was the last NATO member to ratify the protocol. Spain will now forward this ratified protocol to the United States, which will forward it to the NATO headquarter in Brussels. Then Macedonia “will be officially invited to file our law ratifying the North Atlantic Treaty that was adopted in the Parliament,” Dimitrov explained. With these last steps Macedonia will soon become the 30th member of NATO.
