The joint venture Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions builds a facility at its Benalla plant in Victoria/Australia for the production of medium-calibre ammunition for the American combat aircraft Joint Strike Fighter and starts production of 25 mm Frangible Armour Piercing (FAP) projectiles.
The new production line in Benalla has been designed for the production of medium-caliber ammunition in the 20 mm to 35 mm caliber range. In view of the United States government’s security of supply, Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions is thus able to offer a second source of supply for 25 mm ammunition for the Joint Strike Fighter.
NIOA Managing Director Robert Nioa emphasizes that the establishment of the Benalla production facility is a wholly private investment and represents another important step in building up the defence industry in Australia.
The production line is scheduled to be set up in the first half of 2021 and will go into regular operation from September 2021.
Rheinmetall has for years been supplying 25 mm FAP ammunition to two NATO states via the Rheinmetall, Day & Zimmermann Munitions (RDZM) joint venture based in Rosslyn, Virginia/USA. For additional F-35 users, capacities are available from Rheinmetall Waffe Munition Schweiz AG.
