Saab today announced that it has received a contract for submarine life extension and upgrades from Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The contract was valued at SEK 470 million (€44m) and comprises life extension and upgrade works on the submarine HSwMS SÖDERMANLAND, along with new batteries and battery development.
As part of the life extension process, HSwMS SÖDERMANLAND will receive around 50 modifications, enhancing her capabilities and prolonging her operability for a further six years. The order also includes an exchange of the batteries used by the Swedish Navy’s present submarine fleet, as well as a project focussing on battery development, to maintain Sweden’s submarine capabilities over the longer term.
