The first of four SCORPÈNE class submarines of the ProSub programme has been commissioned into service by the Brazilian Navy, with the ceremony taking place at the Itaguaí Naval base. The RIACHUELO was launched in December 2018, following which she underwent sea trials, which were successfully concluded. The second submarine of the series, HUMAITÁ (S41), was launched in December 2020, and is due to commence sea trials in September 2022.
The RIACHUELO (S40) has been fully domestically produced in Brazil by Itaguaí Construções Navais, a joint venture between France’s Naval Group and Brazil’s Novonor (formerly Odebrecht), following a technology transfer programme from Naval Group.
