On 27 October 2022, RAM-System GmbH (RAMSYS) was awarded a contract to deliver 600 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Block 2B surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) for the German Navy. Deliveries of the missiles are scheduled to start in 2024.
The RAM Block 2B is also known as RAM Mk 44 Mod 6, with both terms used to describe the Guided Missile Round Pack, consisting of missile plus canister. However, the missile by itself uses the US designation RIM-116E. Compared to earlier variants, the RAM Block 2B is fitted with a more modern infrared (IR) seeker and a missile-to-missile link to facilitate communication between two or more missiles launched as part of a salvo. The RAM Block 2B was developed by Raytheon Missiles & Defense and Germany’s RAMSYS. RAMSYS is a 50/50 shared joint venture of MBDA Deutschland and Diehl Defence. There is no shareholder structure with Diehl Stiftung and Diehl BGT Defence anymore.
