The Australian Defence Force is to receive simulators for training Boxer CRV (combat reconnaissance vehicle) crews. Rheinmetall announced at the beginning of March 2023 that it has been contracted to develop a reconnaissance variant of the Immersive Tactical Trainer and five variants of Desk Top Trainers for reconnaissance, joint fires, command and control, repair and recovery. The contract is worth AUD 40 M million (EUR 25 M).

Building on know-how transfers from Germany, Rheinmetall has established a full simulation systems development and integration capability at its Australian Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence, where the simulators can be finalised and delivered, said Nathan Poyner, managing director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia.

“A total of 18 simulators are being developed and manufactured for installation, commissioning and maintenance at Australian Army sites,” said Poyner. “The blended learning environment connects the soldier to the platform and is vehicle specific, enabling a self-directed, real-world management system.”

The simulators provide vehicle cabin representation and realistic visual scenes for exercises and can be linked for joint training at troop and squadron level.

The first simulation system is scheduled for delivery later this year.
