Co-operation between the US Army and Patria reached a significant milestone at the Maneuver Warfighter Conference at Fort Moore, Georgia, on 10 September 2024 when a crew of US soldiers successfully demonstrated various fire missions the Patria Nemo 120 mm turreted mortar system.
During the demonstration the US troops fired US mortar ammunition from a Nemo system that had been integrated onto a US Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) and combined with an associated fire direction system.
The US Army is currently striving to provide its Armored Brigade Combat Teams and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with rapid, precise indirect and direct fire capabilities where the operating crew is well protected and their physical burden from impulse noise effects and blast overpressure are significantly reduced.
Patria has conducted a turreted mortar feasibility study with the US Army using its Nemo system, including a Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) regime, since 2020.
Nemo is a remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system capable of both direct- and indirect-fire missions. It can also fire on the move and execute multiple-round simultaneous-impact (MRSI) fire missions that allow up to six rounds to hit a target at the same time. In addition to being highly protected, the system is light, compact and easily installed on light tracked chassis, wheeled armoured vehicles or naval vessels.
“We are extremely pleased to witness the results of our successful co-operation already so far with the US Army and our industry partners,” Janne Räkköläinen, senior vice president for sales and marketing outside Europe for Patria, was quoted as saying in a company press release. “Given the global interest in Patria Nemo’s unique capabilities, we are excited to continue the discussions with the US regarding the next steps and eventually getting Patria Nemo to the US warfighters, increasing their survivability, lethality and manoeuvrability,” he added.
