The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Bulgaria of FGM-148F Javelin anti-armour missiles, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 20 September 2024.

The proposed sales, which is worth an estimated USD 114 million (EUR 101.7 million), has been passed to the US Congress for final approval.

Bulgaria has requested to buy 218 Javelin FGM-148F missiles (including four fly-to-buy missiles) and 107 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLU).

Also included in the package are Javelin LWCLU basic skills trainers; Javelin Outdoor Trainers; battery coolant units; system integration and check out services; lifecycle support; and various elements of technical, logistics, training and programme support.

The Bulgarian Land Forces have not previously operated the FGM-148F Javelin anti-armour missile, with their manportable anti-tank capabilities up to now being reliant on Soviet/Russian-designed anti-armour weapons.

“The proposed sale will improve Bulgaria’s long-term defense capacity to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to meet its national defense requirements,” the DSCA stated.

The prime contractor for the sale will be the Javelin Joint Venture between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon out of their facilities in Orlando, Florida, and Tucson, Arizona, respectively.
