The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) announced on 29 October 2024 that they are placing a EUR 4.7 million order with Finnish company Patria for modular 120 mm mortar systems.
The procurement involves a pre-series of the new mortar system, which the FDF refer to as the 120 KRH M3 and Patria calls the TREMOS. The new system, which was developed by Patria in co-operation with the FDF, integrates a traditional heavy mortar onto a modular carriage, which is then mounted on a military truck. It can utilise both existing and new heavy mortars, along with the FDF’s current fire management system, and can be installed on various vehicles through its integration module.
The 120 KRH M3 system is designed to give the FDF more mobile firing units and greater firing dispersion than previously.
“The mortars will be used in combat support operations,” the FDF stated. “In future they will have a growing role as troops’ own unit of heavy indirect fire.”
“The procurement will not only reinforce the army’s capabilities, but it will also strengthen the domestic security of supply for defence materiel,” Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen was quoted as saying in an FDF press release.
“Patria has enhanced the mobility of heavy mortars in excellent collaboration with the Finnish Army and the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, creating a new weapon system,” Jussi Järvinen, the executive vice president for Patria’s Finland Division, was quoted as saying in a company press release.
“It has already undergone testing, and the pre-series agreement was promptly signed. Decades of experience in developing and manufacturing different weapon systems, such as the Patria AMOS and Patria NEMO mortar systems, have been applied in this development,” Järvinen added.
