UK-based underwater systems provider JFD announced on 24 April 2025 the successful integration and acceptance of its advanced submarine rescue vehicle (SRV) by the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN).

The achievement represents a first for JFD, as the ROKN system comprises a free-swimming SRV deployed and recovered through a moonpool using an innovative launch and recovery system (LARS).

The project builds on a multi-million pound contract JFD secured in January 2019 from South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME, now Hanwha Ocean) to design and build an advanced deep search and rescue vehicle as part of a comprehensive submarine rescue capability for the RoKN.

After completing factory and harbour acceptance trials at JFD’s subsea manufacturing facility in Glasgow, Scotland, the final phase of the project involved integrating the SRV with the rescue vessel’s moonpool system. Unlike traditional SRV deployment methods – such as lowering over the stern or side of a vessel – this integration required tailored engineering solutions.

JFD successfully integrated its SRV with a moonpool-specific LARS, incorporating hydraulic latching systems to securely handle the SRV and an enhanced control system for precise subsea manoeuvring into the cradle. The integration was successfully completed following rigorous trials and acceptance testing, ensuring seamless operation of the SRV and its associated systems, JFD noted.

The resulting capability provides the ROKN with a highly reliable platform for submarine rescue operations. The incorporation of a moonpool design mitigates operational risks in challenging sea states, directly addressing the unique challenges of South Korea’s coastal waters.

“The advancement not only demonstrates JFD’s commitment to innovation, but it also strengthens its longstanding relationship with [the] ROKN, building on the provision of earlier-generation SRVs, which remain in service,” JFD stated in a press release.

“We are proud to strengthen our partnership with Hanwha Ocean and long-standing support to the Republic of Korea Navy with this new submarine rescue capability,” stated JFD Managing Director Rob Hales. This collaboration has drawn on the world-class expertise of Hanwha Ocean and JFD to deliver an innovative solution to enhance submariner safety and operational readiness.

“Our unique combination of specialised knowledge and innovative methodologies is only possible because of the breadth of experience gained by supporting a wide variety of systems across the world,” Hales added. “Our efforts highlight the importance of international partnerships in driving technological progress and strategic resilience, inspiring continued innovation and ensuring that naval forces remain equipped to address emerging safety and security challenges.”
