The Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) has commissioned Thales to modernise the Royal Netherlands Army’s Tactical Indoor Simulator (TACTIS), which is used to carry out training on armoured vehicles and their weapon systems individually and in combination at centralised and decentralised training bases, Thales announced on 30 April 2025

TACTIS creates a virtual yet realistic representation of friendly troops, enemy units, the operational area and weather conditions. Units up to company level can train together in this virtual world, significantly increasing the efficiency of basic and advanced training. In addition to practical situations, the soldiers can also practise many simulated scenarios.

The TACTIS centre is capable of connecting up to 76 simulators simultaneously, enabling operational exercises with up to 200 crew members, according to Thales. This synergy is further enhanced by the integration of up to 2,500 virtual units, the so-called ‘computer-generated forces’, which enable the troops to carry out exercises in a combined arms environment.

The Dutch MoD contract will fully upgrade the TACTIS centre for the Royal Netherlands Army. The modernisation will include the simulation of more than 20 new types of vehicles, including the new generation of Dutch CV90 MkIV infantry fighting vehicles, with Thales co-operating with CV90 manufacturer BAE Hägglunds to deliver a high-fidelity simulation of the vehicle.

The modernised training centre will also offer the ability to integrate future weapon systems that will be deployed within the Royal Netherlands Army, such as the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank.

The virtual environment will additionally reflect the new threat environments emerging on the battlefield, such as operations in an urban setting. The level of immersion will be enhanced through the use of Unreal Engine 5, the world’s most open and advanced real-time 3D tool, allowing for the creation of ultra-realistic, high-quality training environments.

“This cutting-edge technology not only ensures effective learning but also simulates realistic combat conditions, enabling forces to prepare more effectively for contemporary challenges,” Thales stated. “Thanks to TACTIS, team training is optimised to effectively meet the demands of new operational theatres.”
