Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the delivery of Saab Lightweight Torpedoes (SLWTs) and torpedo tubes, the company announced on 7 May 2025.
The contract is valued at approximately SEK 1.3 billion (EUR 120 million), with deliveries beginning in 2026.
The SLWT, named Torped 47 by the Swedish armed forces, is Sweden’s new lightweight torpedo system and is aimed at strengthening Sweden’s naval defence capabilities. The torpedo is intended primarily to be used from Swedish Navy submarines and surface ships, but can also be integrated as an air-launched weapon for delivery by helicopter.
This is the second order from the Swedish FMV for the SLWT, with the first deliveries having begun in 2022.
“We are proud to continue to support Sweden in its efforts to modernise underwater weapon systems in order to protect the Baltic Sea region,” Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s Kockums business unit, was quoted as saying in a Saab press release. “This state-of-the-art system is providing the Swedish armed forces with increased capabilities, including torpedoes, spare parts, training systems and technical support.”
The SLWT has been specially developed for the environment in the Baltic Sea region, which features shallow water with a complex topography and seabed.
“These place high demands on the locating and identification of submarines, as well as on navigation and communication by the torpedo,” Saab stated.
