Spain’s Rheinmetall Expal Munitions displayed an example of its 81 mm (Expal Integrated Mortar System (EIMOS) mounted on a Urovesa VAMTAC ST5 4×4 all-terrain vehicle at FEINDEF 2025, held in Madrid from 12 to 14 May.
A total of 86 VAMTAC ST5-mounted EIMOS systems have been ordered for all branches of the Spanish armed forces, with the Spanish Army’s Galicia VII Brigade and Paratrooper Brigade having already received examples, but Rheinmetall Expal is now proposing a 120 mm version, company executives told ESD at FEINDEF 2025.
The 120 mm mortar variant would retain the original 81 mm EIMOS system’s ability fire across a full 360˚ without having to manoeuvre, but would be integrated onto a larger Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles TGM-series 4×4 truck. Unlike the 81 mm EIMOS, which is manually loaded, the 120 mm version would be loaded semi-automatically.
The Rheinmetall Expal executives at FEINDEF 2025 told ESD that the company is currently concluding development of the 120 mm EIMOS and has been engaging with the Spanish Ministry of Defence with a view to presenting the system.
