The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Germany of AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and related equipment, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 25 September 2025.
The proposed FMS, which is worth an estimated USD 1.23 billion (EUR 1.05 billion), has been passed to the US Congress for final approval.
Germany has requested to buy up to 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs; up to 12 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM guidance sections, including precise positioning provided by either Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module or M-Code; and one AIM-120 AMRAAM Integrated Test Vehicle. The FMS package also contains various non-Major Defense Equipment items and various aspects of technical, training, logistics and programme support
The proposed sale, according to the DSCA, “will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing increased air-to-air capability for the German F-35 program and supporting German and shared NATO planning, training, and operational requirements”.
Germany firmed up its order for 35 F-35A Joint Strike Fighters in 2022.
The principal contractor for the German AMRAAM FMS will be RTX Corporation out of its facilities in Arlington, Virginia.
The DSCA has announced US State Department approval for a number of air-launched weapon FMS cases for European countries in September 2025:
- On 16 September it was announced that an FMS worth USD 570 million covering up to 232 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs for the Netherlands had been approved;
- On 15 September it was announced that an FMS worth USD 567.8 million covering up to 320 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles and 258 AIM-9X Block II+ Sidewinder missiles for Belgium had been approved;
