German defence technology companies Rohde & Schwarz and TRUMPF announced on 22 October 2025 that they have entered a strategic partnership to develop and offer a comprehensive, domestically produced counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) solution.

The collaboration combines Rohde & Schwarz’s expertise in electromagnetic spectrum and radar sensor technology with TRUMPF’s advanced laser technology, enabling powerful detection, tracking and defensive capabilities to counter the growing threat from hostile UAVs.

Rohde & Schwarz will integrate TRUMPF’s high-energy laser system into a comprehensive C-UAV ecosystem.

“Both companies recognise the importance of using their technologies purely defensively to address new security risks: a responsibility they now share,” the companies stated in a joint press release.

Dr Alexander Orellano, the head of Rohde & Schwarz’s Technology Systems division, was quoted as saying, “We are proud to partner with TRUMPF to offer a truly sovereign solution for drone defense. This collaboration leverages the strengths of both companies to address critical security needs. Investing in European defence, and specifically counter-drone technology, is of utmost importance.”

Dr Hagen Zimer, TRUMPF executive board member responsible for laser technology, added, “Our laser technology, our expertise in beam guidance and shaping, and our internally anchored supply chain of system-critical subcomponents offer a highly innovative solution for drone defence. Combined with Rohde & Schwarz’ drone defence expertise, we can deliver a truly effective and integrated solution for protecting critical infrastructure and securing sensitive areas.”
