The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has contracted with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to acquire the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), Kongsberg announced on 27 November 2025.

The precise number of NASAMS units to be acquired by Denmark was not specified, but Kongsberg noted that the contract for them was valued at EUR 500 million.

“With this procurement Denmark will significantly enhance the country’s operational capabilities and the ability to effectively combat modern air threats, and furthermore strengthen the overall NASAMS air defence presence in the Nordic region,” Eirik Lie, president of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, was quoted as saying in a company press release.

The NASAMS purchase is part of a considerable air defence ramp-up being conducted by the Danish armed forces in light of Russian belligerence in Europe. In June 2025 the Danish Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that Denmark would initially strengthen the country’s air defences by leasing a short/medium-range NASAMS system from Norway while purchasing IRIS-T SLM medium-range systems from Diehl Defence and short-range VL MICA systems from MBDA.

Then, in September 2025, the Danish MoD announced it would acquire the SAMP/T medium-range air defence system produced by Eurosam: a joint venture between MBDA and Thales.

The NASAMS system combines Raytheon’s AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar and advanced missile variants with a fire distribution centre produced by Kongsberg and multiple missile canister launchers.

AMRAAM Extended Range missiles can be used for medium-range engagements, while AIM-9X-2 missiles can be used for shorter-range engagements.

Denmark will become the 14th NASAMS user nation overall and the eighth user nation in NATO.
