Patria launches a new passive counter-battery radar Patria WISPR at Eurosatory in Paris
Patria Group
Patria introduced Patria WISPR (Weapon Indication and Sensing Passive Radar) at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris on 16 June 2026, expanding the company’s passive sensor offering with a new radar solution for counter-battery operations. This first-of-its-kind system for projectile detection and weapon locating has been designed to operate without being detected in the radio spectrum. Patria WISPR supports survivability and availability through continuous, silent surveillance based on Passive Coherent Location technology.
Ongoing military operations have led armed forces to reassess how to maintain continuous battlefield surveillance in environments where emissions increase exposure.
“Patria WISPR will be critical in enabling a new level of resilience and survivability in counter-battery operations. In today’s operational environment, where the time from detection to strike is short, active radars risk exposure due to their emissions. Patria WISPR responds to this challenge by providing a silent projectile detection. It can operate independently or alongside active counter-battery radars as a cueing sensor, supporting longer operational use while ensuring availability when needed most,” says Mikko Leino, Executive Vice President of Patria’s Defence and Weapon Systems business area.
Patria WISPR uses antenna arrays and enhanced passive radar signal processing to detect, locate and track artillery, mortar and rocket projectiles at operationally relevant ranges. The system currently utilises digital television transmitters as its primary source of illumination, providing more than 100 degrees of azimuth coverage with a very high update rate. It can be deployed as a single station or as a network of multiple stations. In both configurations, the system can be controlled and managed remotely.
In addition to projectile detection and weapon locating, the multi-purpose passive radar system can be used for air surveillance. This enables detection and tracking of aerial targets, including difficult-to-detect and highly manoeuvrable UAVs operating in radio silence.
