The EU has selected the FAMOUS (European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems) consortium to develop ground combat capabilities under the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP). This can be incorporated into next-generation armoured platforms and used to upgrade existing systems. The project aims to maximise synergies, standardisation and interoperability capabilities of armoured vehicles to meet highly demanding requirements (extreme climate and geographic conditions) while introducing innovative and promising new technologies and concepts. Different types of vehicles will be targeted, such as future All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs) and Main Battle Tanks (MBTs).
Topics of the €9M study include:
- hybrid mobility
- power generation and energy storage
- safety systems
- situational awareness
- robotics
- C4I solutions
- weapon systems
- advanced lifecycle support solutions.
The study is expected to start in autumn 2021 and to be completed after 24 months.
The FAMOUS consortium is coordinated by the Finnish armoured wheeled vehicle manufacturer, Patria Land, who announced the news. The consortium’s 20 companies from nine EU countries include ground combat system integrators and high-tech SMEs. They bring highly complementary expertise, technologies and know-how to the project. From Germany, the following are participating:
- Diehl Defence
- DST Defence Service Tracks
- FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft
- Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.
