Rheinmetall has received another ammunition order from the Spanish government, this time for mortar rounds, the company announced on 3 April 2024.

The order, which Rheinmetall has said is “in the higher double-digit-million-euro range”, is to supply the Spanish army with a total of 104,000 mortar rounds in the 60 mm, 81 mm and 120 mm calibres by the end of 2025.

Rheinmetall noted in a press release that this is the second contract for mortar rounds under a framework agreement with Spain.

The mortar rounds – ordered in high explosive (HE), smoke and illumination variants – will be used by the Spanish Army’s infantry units, among others. Depending on the calibre and mortar system used, they have different ranges of between 2.59 km (60 mm) and 8.25 km (120 mm).

On 13 March 2024 Rheinmetall announced that it had received an order worth around EUR 208 million for 94,200 155 mm artillery rounds for the Spanish Army.

Rheinmetall acquired Spanish ammunition manufacturer Expal in August 2023.
