Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the Giraffe 1X radar for one of Sweden’s ground-based air defence (GBAD) solutions, the company announced on 30 August 2024.

The contract period is 2024-2027 and the order value is approximately SEK 700 million (EUR 61.7 million).

The order covers Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar, associated command-and-control systems and integration with a Swedish GBAD solution that involves installation on a Sisu GTP 4×4 armoured vehicle.

“I am proud that Sweden chooses to integrate our versatile surface radar Giraffe 1X as a part of its ground-based air defence,” Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s surveillance business area, was quoted as saying in a company press release. “Our solution will contribute to strengthening Sweden’s ground-based air defence capability and to protecting the forces with advanced capability to detect and identify threats while on the battlefield.”

The Giraffe 1X is a lightweight, multi-mission surveillance radar that provides GBAD commanders with engagement-quality target data, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detection and counter-artillery, rocket and mortar (C-RAM) sense-and-warn capabilities within a single solution. The system’s weight of less than 150 kg (with a topside weight of 100 kg), together with its low power consumption, allows it to be easily integrated into any type of mobile platform or fixed structure.

The system also offers continuous software upgrades in order to meet emerging threats.

According to Saab website, the Giraffe 1X can detect a UAV lighter than a milk carton at ranges out to 4 km.
