A renaming ceremony for the two Italian multi-purpose offshore patrol vessels (Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura – PPA) sold to the Indonesian Navy was held on 29 January 2025 at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia).
The Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a EUR 1.18 billion contract with Fincantieri in March 2024 for the acquisition of the two PPA ships, which were under construction for the Italian Navy at the time.
The ceremony was attended by, among others, Fincantieri Chairman Biagio Mazzotta; Dario Deste, general manager of Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division; Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of The Indonesian Navy; and Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy.
Originally built as the fifth and sixth PPA units for the Italian Navy, the two ships, formerly named Marcantonio Colonna (P 433) and Ruggiero di Lauria (P 435), have now been renamed KRI Brawijaya and KRI Prabu Si Li Wang.
The two ships are scheduled for delivery to the Indonesian Navy in 2025, while the construction of two replacement vessels for the Italian Navy is expected in due course.
The Indonesian contract for the two ships stemmed from the interest generated during the campaigns of the PPA vessels Francesco Morosini (P 431) and Raimondo Montecuccoli (P432) in Indonesia in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The contract also marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Fincantieri and the Indonesian MoD.
Built at Fincantieri’s integrated Riva Trigoso-Muggiano shipyard, the PPA vessels will be the largest combat ships in the Indonesian Navy.
With a length overall of 143 m and a full-load displacement of around 5,830 tonnes, the PPA is a highly versatile class of ship designed to perform a wide range of missions, including frontline combat operations, maritime patrol, search and rescue, and civil protection duties. Powered by a combined diesel and gas (CODAG) propulsion system, the class has a top speed of 32 kts (59 km/h), a range of 5,000 n miles (9,260 km) and an endurance of 30 days.
Weapon systems can include a 127 mm Vulcano main gun, a 16-cell vertical launch system for surface-to-air missiles, eight Teseo Mk 2 anti-ship missiles and two triple launchers for lightweight torpedoes. The ship can also accommodate two NH90-sized helicopters or one AW101.
