Navantia is to support the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) in its project to enhance the capabilities of the RTN landing platform dock (LPD) HTMS Chang (792), the Spanish shipbuilder announced on 10 April 2025.

The contract includes the provision and integration of the combat management system (CMS), surveillance system, fire control system (FCS), weapon system, gyrocopes, and other related technologies.

The Chinese-built HTMS Chang, which is 210 m long and displaces more than 20,000 tonnes, was commissioned in April 2023 after being ordered under a contract signed in September 2019.

“Navantia will equip the HTMS Chang with some of its most cutting-edge naval systems, including the Catiz CMS and Dorna FCS, ensuring the RTN benefits from the most advanced capabilities available,” the company stated in a press release.

Navantia has a longstanding relationship with the RTN, given that its predecessor, Bazán, built and supplied the aircraft carrier HTMS Chakri Naruebet (911): the flagship of the RTN fleet. This new contract not only strengthens the ties between Navantia and the RTN but also boosts local skills and industry through collaboration with the Mahidol Dockyard: a partnership that paves the way for future projects and further co-operation.

“This contract underscores Navantia’s excellence in naval defence systems, modernisation projects and high-value-added services,” the company stated. “It reaffirms Navantia’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art solutions and supporting the strategic needs of its partners.”
