FEINDEF 2025: Indra and Rheinmetall Landsysteme sign MoU on Spanish AFV co-operation

Spanish company Indra and Germany’s Rheinmetall Landsysteme have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on strategic co-operation in relation to armoured vehicle projects for the Spanish armed forces.

The MoU, which was signed on 13 May at the FEINDEF 2025 defence exhibition in Madrid, further enhances the ongoing relationship between Indra and Rheinmetall, as exemplified by the recently announced agreement under which Indra will manufacture the combat system for the Spanish Army’s Leopard 2E main battle tanks (MBTs) in Spain under licence from Rheinmetall Electronics.

Rheinmetall, as a leading international designer and manufacturer of tracked and wheeled armoured vehicles, has significant technological shares in the Leopard 2A4 MBTs currently in Spanish service. The company already has a significant presence in Spain as the parent firm of Rheinmetall Expal Munitions.

Indra, meanwhile, is the supplier of the Lince battle management system currently used by Spanish Leopard 2s and the main design authority for the Maestre mission system currently contracted for installation in the Spanish Army’s VCR 8×8 Dragón armoured vehicles. As well as having significant experience in Leopard 2 electronics systems, Indra also has simulator solutions for Leopard 2E MBT and other armoured vehicles.

“With this MoU, Indra and Rheinmetall, two leading European companies in the field of defence technology, start a strong alliance to support the efforts of the Spanish armed forces to modernise their fleet of combat vehicles,” Eduardo Veen Martinez, CEO of Rheinmetall’s tactical vehicles business unit, was quoted as saying in a joint press release.

Ángel Escribano, chairman of Indra Group, stated, “The agreement with Rheinmetall represents a significant step forward in Indra’s strategy of forming alliances and partnerships to strengthen its military vehicle manufacturing and digitalisation capabilities in Spain,” adding, “This is an example of what Europeans can achieve when working together.”
