Patria has conducted successful test firings with its new 155 mm ARVE (ARtillery on VEhicle) mobile field gun, the company announced on 26 June 2025.
During the test firings, carried out in June 2025, dozens of shots were fired at different elevations and side angles as well as in direct-fire mode. The system performed as expected throughout the firings, despite the weapon firing even the most powerful overpressure charge, Patria noted.
Patria introduced the new weapon system, which is suitable for Arctic conditions, in March 2025 at the international Arctic Event in Lapland. The system is based on Patria’s 155K98 field artillery system, which is widely used by the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF), and is integrated onto the chassis of a Sisu all-terrain truck.
The ARVE mobile field gun is produced entirely domestically is modular and fully compatible with the FDF’s current artillery fleet in terms of maintenance, spare parts and ammunition, Patria noted, adding that the system is also compatible with NATO ammunition and fire control systems.
Patria designed the system to combine high mobility with a rapid rate of fire and the ability to fire at naval targets. The company says the system’s advanced technology and performance “is nevertheless based on proven subsystems in operational use”, adding that the ARVE “can be integrated into any suitable vehicle platform and customers’ own indirect fire control systems as part of a larger artillery system”.
“It has been truly great to develop [for] Patria a new and innovative ARVE mobile field gun system for our overall indirect fire offering, especially now that the security situation in our neighbouring areas has become more tense,” Mikko Leino, executive vice president of Patria’s Defence and Weapon Systems business area, was quoted as saying in a company press release. “The system is designed for harsh field conditions and our expectations regarding its usability, performance and reliability are very high.
“The completely successful test and acceptance firings are a testament to both Patria’s domestic weapon system expertise and ARVE’s technical readiness. We believe that our new product will meet the performance requirements of our customers and will also find its way into international markets,” Leino added.
