The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Ukraine of equipment, repair services and sustainment support for M777 howitzers, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 5 August 2025.

The proposed FMS, which is worth an estimated USD 104 million (EUR 89.5 million), has been passed to the US Congress for final approval.

As well as equipment, repair services and long-term sustainment support for M777 howitzers, also included in the package requested by Ukraine is technical assistance, training, publications and other related elements of logistics and programme support.

“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s ability to meet current and future threats by further equipping it to conduct self-defence and regional security missions with a more robust local sustainment capability,” the DSCA stated.

It is not known how many M777s Ukraine has received from the United States and other allies since the country was invaded by Russia in February 2022. A Pentagon factsheet published on 30 December 2024 stated that “more than 200 155 mm howitzers” had been provided, while Canada has provided at least four M777s and Australia has transferred at least six. However, as of 6 August 2025 the Oryx Ukraine War blog was listing 102 M777s verified as destroyed or damaged, while numerous M777s still in service must be suffering from barrel wear.

The principal contractor for the Ukrainian M777 repair and sustainment will be BAE Systems out of its facilities in Barrow-in-Furness, England.
