Ukraine’s KZVV is now able to manufacture 2S22 Bohdana 155 mm/52 calibre self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) at a rate of at least 30 units per month, a company representative told ESD at Poland’s MSPO 2025 defence exhibition at Targi Kielce on 3 September.
The latest version of the Bohdana SPH is mounted on an 8×8 Tatra Phoenix chassis and features an armoured cabin protected to NATO STANAG Level 2b made by Ukrainian Armor.
The Bohdana SPH prototype was originally mounted on a 6×6 chassis produced by Ukrainian firm KrAZ and entered production in early 2023, but the Kraz production facilities in Kremenchuk, just a few hundred kilometres from the front line with invading Russian forces, have been vulnerable to attack since the beginning of the Ukraine War and could consequently not maintain the sustained production of chassis. Some use of chassis sourced from MAZ in Belarus also proved a dead end, given that country’s alignment with Russia.
The first production Bohdanas used a Tatra 815-7 8×8 chassis.
Manned by a crew of five, the Bohdana can achieve a maximum range of 41.3 km, a rate of fire of up to five rounds per minute and can be deployed and redeployed in 90 seconds. Each SPH has an onboard ammunition loadout of 20 rounds.
The Bohdana’s barrel can be elevated from -5 to +65˚and traversed 30˚ left or right.
Crucially for production within Ukraine, the 155 mm weapon itself has a completely closed production cycle independent from external suppliers.
KZVV asserts that the Bohdana SPH is two to three times cheaper than its Western counterparts.
