On 9 September 2025, the UK and Norway formally joined the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme to procure the Patria 6×6 armoured personnel carrier (APC), raising the number of members to seven. In the signing ceremony, the UK was represented by Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard MP, while Norway was represented by Deputy Director of the Forsvarsmateriell (Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency) Maj Gen Øyvind Kvalvik.

The UK and Norway join Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Sweden as CAVS programme members. It should be noted that there is still some work to be done before a firm order for Patria 6×6 vehicles is placed, with the signing ceremony representing the first of four phases:
  • Phase 1 – Technical Arrangement
  • Phase 2 – Research and Development
  • Phase 3 – Framework Agreement
  • Phase 4 – Placing the Order.

The speed with which the phases are cleared depends on each member and their requirements. In the case of the UK, the Patria 6×6 is slated to be produced domestically by Babcock. However the exact quantities required and the scope of work to be performed by Babcock have not yet been revealed.

Nonetheless, the move marks a significant step forward for the CAVS programme, with the Patria 6×6 moving into a dominant position, setting the stage to become the most numerous 6×6 wheeled APC platform within Europe.

With Norway and the UK joining CAVS, the programme now has seven members. [Mark Cazalet]
