The Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMoD) has ordered thousands of Iron Sting precision-guided mortar rounds from Elbit Systems, it announced on 29 July 2024. The order, which is worth USD 190 million (EUR 176 million) according to Elbit, will be delivered over the next two years.

Iron Sting precision-guided munitions (PGMs) are “equipped with sophisticated laser and GPS guidance systems, enabling precise targeting while minimising collateral damage and reducing the risk to non-combatants. These advanced munitions represent a significant leap in the IDF’s [Israel Defense Force’s] ability to conduct operations in complex combat conditions and urban environments” the IMoD stated in a press release.

Launched from a 120 mm mortar, Iron Sting PGMs weigh 17 kg, have a range of up to 10 km and feature a multi-mode fuze with point detonation, point detonation delay and proximity sensor operating modes.

Since the outbreak of the war with Hamas in October 2023 the IMoD’s Directorate of Defense Procurement has accelerated the acquisition of cutting-edge weaponry.
