The US State Department has approved two possible Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to Egypt covering AN/TPS-78 long-range radars and fast missile craft (FMC) modernisation, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 4 February 2025.
The radar sale, which is worth an estimated USD 304 million (EUR 293 million), and the FMC modernisation, which is worth USD 625 million (EUR 602.6 million), have been passed to the US Congress for final approval.
Egypt has requested to buy AN/TPS-78 long-range radar turnkey systems; KIV-78 cryptographic devices; GPS devices with Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Modules (SAASM); spare and repair parts; and various aspects of training, engineering, logistics and programme support.
The DSCA stated that the proposed AN/TPS-78 sale “will improve Egypt’s capability to meet current and future threats by improving its ability to detect various air threats”.
Meanwhile, Egypt has requested to buy various equipment and services to modernise its four FMCs, including four Component Based Total Ship System 21st Century (COMBATSS-21) combat management systems, air and surface surveillance radars; chaff decoy systems; electro-optical/infrared sensors; electronic warfare systems; navigation data distribution systems; communications intelligence systems; fire control radars; 76 mm gun upgrades; and other related elements of logistics and programme support.
The DSCA noted that this sale “will improve Egypt’s capability to meet current and future threats by increasing the tactical and operational capabilities of the Egyptian Navy to support strategic maritime security objectives”.
The principal contractor for the AN/TPS-78 FMS will be Northrop Grumman Corporation out of its facilities in Falls Church, Virginia, while the prime contractors for the FMC modernisation will Lockheed Martin, located in Manassas, Virginia, and L3Harris, located in Northampton, Massachusetts.
