Following a comprehensive modernisation effort, Boeing has delivered the first CH-47F CHINOOK transport helicopter to the Spanish Army. The company has announced that the Spanish Army’s entire fleet of 17 CH-47Ds will be upgraded to the new standard.

According to the company, the CH-47F features a digital automatic flight control system, common avionics architecture and advanced cargo handling while ensuring interoperability with allied nations. In addition, the Army expects to reduce maintenance costs by 56 per cent maintenance hours per flight hour. With a volume of €820m, the modernisation programme is to be completed by 2024.

In addition to Spain, the Netherlands and the UK have modernised their CH-47F fleets. In Germany, the CH-47F is a candidate for the Heavy Transport Helicopter programme, the procurement procedure of which is currently on hold.
