The US subsidiary of Israeli fire control system (FCS) specialist Smartshooter has been awarded a follow-on contract to supply additional SMASH 2000L fire control systems to the US Army, the company announced on 3 October 2023.

Systems from the initial award have already been deployed to give infantry a counter-uncrewed aircraft system (C-UAS) capability. The latest order has been placed for the same purpose.

SMASH is an infantry weapon FCS equipped with an onboard computer to perform complex targeting solutions. Once the user identifies the target (independently or using the detection system guidance) and locks on it, SMASH tracks its movements and synchronises the shot release to ensure a fast and precise hit on the target.

“Securing this follow-on contract is a testament to the proven effectiveness of our SMASH fire control systems within the US Army,” Michal Mor, Smartshooter’s CEO, was stated as saying in a company press release.

Meanwhile, with the approach of the Association of the US Army’s annual meeting and exhibition, to be held in Washington, DC, from 9-11 October 2023, Smartshooter has said it will showcase the SMASH Hunter WOLF: a new collaboration with Leonardo DRS and HDT Global. The system integrates HDT Global’s Hunter WOLF, a highly manoeuvrable hybrid-electric unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed to support light infantry, with DRS’s tactical radar technologies and Smartshooter’s SMASH Hopper light remote weapon station (RWS), delivering an end-to-end solution for countering uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) and shortening the sensor-to-shooter cycle.

The Hunter WOLF features an internal diesel/JP-8 genset capable of offloading 15 kW of power and is purpose-designed to support over 20 modular mission payloads. Equipped with DRS’s RPS-42 radar for long-range detection and tracking, it empowers the SMASH Hopper RWS to engage hostile UAVs from a safe stand-off distance, with the SMASH Hopper’s high hit probability delivering precise, swift and safe hard-kill elimination of the UAV threat.
