RTX business Raytheon announced on 11 July 2024 that it has been awarded another USD 1.2 billion (EUR 1.1 billion) contract to supply Germany with additional Patriot air and missile defence systems.

The contract is the second such contract from Germany this year after the company previously announced on 21 March 2024 it had received a USD 1.2 billion Patriot contract from Germany.

A Raytheon spokesperson confirmed to ESD on 17 July that both the latest contract and the previous contract in March each covered four fire units, the components of which included the most current Patriot Configuration 3+ radars, launchers, engagement control stations (C2), dismounted Information Coordination Central (ICC) units, power supplies, transporters, communications, associated spares and support.

The systems ordered this year will thus augment Germany’s existing air defence infrastructure with additional Patriot major end items.

“Patriot remains the tried-and-true stalwart of air and missile defence, relied upon by our global customers to deter aggression and defend their interests,” Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, was quoted as saying in a company press release. “With each additional Patriot system, Germany is enhancing its own air defences and strengthening NATO’s defence posture.”

Raytheon refers to the Patriot system as “the only combat-proven ground-based air and missile defence capability available in the world to defeat advanced long-range cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles and the full spectrum of air-breathing threats”.

The system is in service in 19 countries, including Germany, the United States and Ukraine.
