Israeli sighting specialist Smartshooter unveiled a new counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) system call Smash Dome on 28 January 2025.
Described by the company as a lightweight, portable and adaptable solution, Smash Dome is built around the Smash Hopper: a lightweight, remote weapon station (RWS) equipped with an assault rifle and a ballistically calculated fire control system (FCS). The SMASH Hopper is developed for accurate hit capabilities against UAVs and can be integrated with a command-and-control (C2) system to enable automatic UAV target detection and tracking, providing operators with real-time, calculated ballistic solutions. The system can integrate different kinds of weapons and ammunition to enable the kinetic interception of different types of UAVs.
Complementing the Smash Hopper RWS is Smash Dome’s architecture, which incorporates active radar and passive optical detection systems to detect, classify and track UAV targets. With detection ranges spanning up to 1-2 km (depending on sensor type), the sensors continuously transmit target data to Smartshooter’s proprietary tracking system, ensuring continuous monitoring and real-time UAV interception readiness.
The Smash Dome is designed for integration on both manned and unmanned vehicles and platforms, as well as for use on the ground, along borders and at strategic facilities.
The system additionally features a ‘man-in-the-loo’p design that ensures precision and operational control. Through the FCS feed operators maintain visual confirmation of targets, enabling automatic UAV tracking and initiation of a kinetic response with a simple command.
“This precise approach minimises collateral damage and enhances overall operational efficiency, particularly in densely populated or sensitive areas,” the company stated.
“Our world is increasingly facing the challenge of rogue drones disrupting and endangering critical areas,” Michal Mor, Smartshooter’s CEO, was quoted as saying in a company press release. “Smash Dome, powered by our unique Smash technology, provides a cost-effective and precise solution to this threat. Its seamless integration with existing command-and-control systems makes it a versatile asset, serving as both a standalone defence and an essential ‘insurance policy’ for passive C-UAS solutions.
“By minimising ammunition use and ensuring effective interception of both small drones and larger UASs, Smash Dome exemplifies Smartshooter’s dedication to protecting forces and critical infrastructure from evolving aerial threats,” Mor added.
