Sweden’s Saab and Finnish synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite specialist ICEYE announced on 5 March 2025 that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to co-operate on the development and integration of advanced space-based radar data into Saab’s command-and-control (C2) systems.

In integrating ICEYE’s cutting-edge SAR technology into Saab’s C2 solutions, the strategic co-operation aims to enhance tactical decision-making, situational awareness and long-range targeting capabilities for defence customers.

The MoU lays the foundations to further co-operation between Saab and ICEYE, with the initial focus on investigating and demonstrating integration for multi-domain operations. The benefits would enable advanced space situational awareness and critical infrastructure protection capabilities, providing valuable insights for both civilian and military authorities in times of peace, conflict or the ‘grey zone’ in between, the companies noted.

“Saab’s integration with ICEYE data will provide real-time, high-resolution imagery through clouds and darkness, enabling comprehensive surveillance and reconnaissance for faster, even more informed decisions, in complex operational environments,” Carl-Johan Bergholm, senior vice president and head of Saab’s Surveillance business area, was quoted as saying in a company press release.

Pekka Laurila, CSO and co-founder of ICEYE, stated of the MoU, “It is crucial to remain one step ahead and effective situational awareness is a key tenet of this. We are bringing together cutting-edge SAR technology from ICEYE, and the finest C2 systems from Saab, to look at new and improved ways to maintain the advantage through enhanced situational awareness, leading to better surveillance and protection.”
