The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Saudi Arabia of AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 2 May 2025.
The proposed sale, which is worth an estimated USD 3.5 billion (EUR 3.08 billion), has been passed to the US Congress for final approval.
Saudi Arabia has requested to buy 1,000 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs and 50 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM guidance sections. The package also contains various other items, such as spares, support equipment, documentation and various elements of logistics, technical and programme support.
The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) already has the AIM-120C in its inventory and operates hundreds of aircraft that can carry the AMRAAM, including around 232 F-15C/D/S/SAs and 71 Eurofighter Typhoons.
The DSCA stated that the proposed FMS “will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that contributes to political stability and economic progress in the Gulf region”.
The principal contractor for the Saudi AMRAAM FMS will be RTX Corporation out of its facilities in Tucson, Arizona.
