KNDS Belgium has inaugurated a new 155 mm artillery-shell production capability at its site in Petit-Roeulx-Lez-Nivelles, Belgium.

The inauguration of the Large-Calibre Machining and Banding Unit (UCGC) was presided over by Belgian Defence Minister Théo Francken. The facility includes an automated production line for 155 mm artillery shells, intended to strengthen the group’s industrial capacity – which already includes two production lines – amid strong international demand for munitions following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

“One production line, two benefits: autonomy and jobs. By manufacturing our ammunition ourselves we keep the economic value added here and gain strategic strength,” said Francken during the ceremony. “In 2026, with our CAESAR howitzers ready for use, we will be firing Belgian munitions.”

Belgium initially ordered nine CAESAR MK2 wheeled 155 mm self-propelled howitzers in May 2022 and then subsequently decided in June 2022 to acquire another 19, the purchase of which was approved in December 2023.

Jean-Michel Girard, director of KNDS Belgium, stated, “In 2026, nearly six months of production will be dedicated to shells for the Belgian Defence. This is a great source of pride for our company, which has been serving the Land Force for almost 90 years. We maintain a constructive and ongoing dialogue with Defence on technical, conceptual and operational levels. This investment generates workload while supporting our innovation dynamic and skills development. Many projects are still to come.”

He also noted “the importance for Belgium of having a major national player in the field of medium- and large-calibre munitions, adding that, “With 350 employees, KNDS Belgium is a key player in Belgium’s defence-industrial and technological base, and a globally recognised partner.”

With the inauguration of its new 155 mm artillery ammunition production facilities at Petit-Roeulx-Lez-Nivelles, KNDS Belgium will ensure that the country can provide its own ammunition for the Belgian Land Component’s future fleet of CAESAR MK2 wheeled 155 mm self-propelled howitzers.
