The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Singapore of P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft (MPAs), MK 54 lightweight torpedoes and related equipment, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 20 January 2026.

The proposed FMS, which is worth an estimated USD 2.316 billion (EUR 1.97 billion), has been passed to the US Congress for final approval.

Singapore has requested to buy up to four P-8A aircraft, along with associated mission and avionics systems, as well as an intial and eight MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedo all-up rounds. Non-Major Defense Equipment items as well as spares and various aspects of programme, technical training and logistics support are also part of the proposed deal.

The DSCA stated that that the sale of P-8A MPAs to Singapore “will improve Singapore’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible maritime force capable of deterring adversaries and participating in US allied operations”, adding that the proposed sale “will support Singapore’s goal of improving national and territorial defense as well as increasing interoperability with US and allied forces”.

The principal contractor for the deal would be Boeing, as the manufacturer of the P-8, while the majority of MK 54 lightweight torpedo hardware would be purchased directly from US Navy stock.

On 29 December 2025 the DSCA announced that the US State Department had approved an FMS to Denmark worth an estimated USD 1.8 billion that covered the purchase of up to three P-8A aircraft.

Ironically this approval announcement would have coincided with US President Donald Trump belittling Denmark’s commitment to defending the High North amid his pursuit of ownership over Greenland.
