Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply its Sea Giraffe 1X radar system to the Swedish Navy, the company announced on 13 December 2024.

The order, which is valued at around SEK 340 million (EUR 29.5 million) with deliveries running from now until 2026, covers Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar systems in different configurations for training as well as installation on surface ships.

“We are happy to continue to provide the Swedish Navy with modern radar systems,” Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Surveillance business area,” was quoted as saying in a company press release. “Sea Giraffe 1X will contribute in protecting coastal and littoral areas and strengthen the naval units with advanced capabilities to detect, track and classify threats in the air and on the surface,” he added.

The Sea Giraffe 1X is a multi-purpose 3D active electronically scanned-array (AESA) radar that can simultaneously detect, track and classify objects in the air and on the surface, including unmanned aerial vehicles. As a software-defined radar system it can receive updates to meet new threats and is suitable for both smaller and larger ships, as well as autonomous vessels.

The total weight of the Sea Giraffe 1X is less than 150 kg, with a topside weight of just 100 kg. This low system weight, together with its very low power consumption, makes the Sea Giraffe 1X suitable for use not only on smaller vessels and highly manoeuvrable forces, but also as a radar complement on larger ships.
