Saab has received an order from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) for the life-time extension of the Spanish Army’s Arthur radar systems, the company announced on 20 October 2025.
The order, which is valued at around SEK 540 million (EUR 49.4 million), “will, with modern technology, ensure the critical capabilities of Spain’s artillery locating force while sustaining cost effectiveness”, Saab stated..
The life-time extension will provide the Spanish Arthur radars with both high operational mobility and precise counter-battery operation, meaning an increased number of targets can be located at greater ranges but with a reduced electronic signature.
“We are pleased to continue to strengthen Spain’s artillery locating capability, which is critical in warning of incoming fire as well as enabling quick counter-battery fire,” Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Surveillance business area, was quoted as saying in a company press release. “The order is the first of our radar systems to go via NATO’s purchasing organisation, which is an important step for us,” he added.
The Arthur system is an artillery-locating radar that offers a modern, digitised system that can warn troops and civilians of incoming fire and also be used for fire control, such as directing counter-battery fire.
