India has reached an agreement with the Philippines to supply the BRAHMOS anti-ship missile jointly produced with Russia. This is the first export order for this kind of weapon system. BRAHMOS has already entered service with the Indian Navy, Army and Air Force.
According to the Philippine Government, the procurement effort covers three supersonic cruise missile batteries for US$375M. Each battery includes two launchers, a radar and a command and control centre. The system can fire two missiles in 10 seconds.
Delphine Lorenzana, Philippine Defense Secretary, announced that the systems would be assigned to the Marine Corps Coast Guard Regiment. The version of BRAHMOS acquired by the Philippines has a range of 290 km and is expected to support control of disputed sea spaces also claimed by China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.
